Lady with a Cigar
42”x36”, Charcoal on paper mounted on foam board
The Kodhus inhabiting the Eastern Ghats are known to perform Dhimsa – a form of tribal dance. I went looking for them and found a group of women sitting together. They seemed strong, wore many ornaments and had several piercings. When I asked one of them about the dance, she nodded, took out a cigar that she had rolled earlier, and popped it in her mouth in style. Before lighting it, she asked me to click her picture while she posed confidently.
